arpents

During the 1760’s, the Spanish apportioned land along the Mississippi River in the form of long narrow plots.  There were many advantages to this redistricting.  In giving every landowner river frontage, transportation and communication along the river was more democratic and successful.  Also the responsibility to maintain levees was divided among more people.  This definition allows you to visualize and manipulate this land apportioning.  The basic unit of this structure is the arpent.  One arpent is approximately 192 feet.
