An Intervention Above Changing Sea Levels (Final Physical Model and Overview of Semester Work)

In translating the final Rhino model into a physical model, our plans went generally as expected; however, the major misstep was the assumption that the transparencies used to model water on the bluffs would be able to hold their desired shape. As a result, we used thin acrylic for this portion of the model and placed these in slits cut into the acrylic representing the sea level, making the hanging of these elements from the metal frame above unnecessary.

An Intervention Above Changing Sea Levels (Final Rhino Model)

We have completed our final Rhino model of a small collection of homes and classrooms, all of which are situated on cliffs above changing relative sea levels. As the previous posts indicate, the means of representation of the topography and surrounding environment focuses mainly on the water at the site, as the rainwater on the bluffs and the level of the sea are the only indications of the site. The design of the intervention follows the language used in the representation of the water, as the shapes of the homes and paths between them mirror the sea’s structure and the entire system rests on rails that mimic the slope of the rainwater on the bluffs.

The imagined assembly of the physical model is shown below, beginning with the preparation of an acrylic water base, then the use of metal frames, and finally the hanging of transparencies for the water on the bluffs.

Analysis of Erosion (Grasshopper Workshop)

Having recently realized that our work during the Grasshopper workshop with Andy Payne had not been posted, we have belatedly included a few images and the Rhino and Grasshopper files here.

Unfortunately, our initial idea of modeling water on a slope and directing that water required scripting and Grasshopper knowledge beyond our own. As a result, we opted to do an analysis of the degree of erosion on a slope, which was largely based on the degree of curviture of the path of water down the slope. The following pictures indicate that as the degree of curviture of a path increases, the circles around it increase in diameter, demonstrating a higher erosional effect on the topography. More direct slopes alternately affect the surrounding land less. The images below also show that the Grasshopper model allows for change in location of the path of water and the degree of analysis.

Catastrophe: Process Study Cont…

This definition seeks to explore Grasshopper as a tool for the modelling of process, totally apart from formal representations of the agents of change in that process. For instance, how might we model the process of erosion without using the forms of ground, water, or wind to do it?

This excercise does not seek to turn attention away from agents of change, and thereby model a completely a-historical process, but rather seeks to loosen up the ontological categories of the formal determinants of change as a way of exploring the always more complicated and interconnected nature of process.

Final Model

We translated our virtual model into a physical model. The model is composed of solid sheets of plexiglass with the topography and settlement platforms engraved into it. We represented the dynamic flood condition by showing the model in a flood condition (and with our floating platforms therefore raised to meet the fixed ones), and engraving the profiles of the floating platforms on the ground below them. The following animation of our virtual model shows the condition in flux:

Grasshopper Workshop

In the Grasshopper Workshop, Emily and I continued to develop our intervention on O-Hill. The grasshopper definition that we developed consists of two elements — lines that move in the direction of the wind with a force proportional to their elevation (and therefore to their exposure to wind), and panels that trace contour lines and move perpendicular to the wind to act as a shelter from it.
